Benedict’s Law and the latest DfE allergy safety guidance ask schools in England to make sure every adult on site can recognise a serious allergic reaction and act on it, not just the trained first aiders. Our Anaphylaxis Awareness session is built for exactly that. It is a whole staff session that gives everyone, from teachers and teaching assistants to office staff, lunchtime supervisors and site teams, the confidence to spot anaphylaxis early and respond quickly.
Why every member of staff needs this
A serious allergic reaction can happen anywhere in school and to anyone, including a child with no known allergy. The adult who is closest when it happens is not always a first aider. That is the thinking behind Benedict’s Law, and it is why the guidance points towards awareness for all staff rather than a small trained few. When everyone knows the signs and the first steps, the response is faster and calmer, and that is what makes the difference.

- The signs and symptoms, and how to recognise them early
- How to respond and call for help without delay
- How to use an adrenaline pen with confidence
How it runs
The session runs for 90 minutes and fits comfortably into a September INSET day. It works for up to 150 staff at a time, and it can be delivered alongside a fuller accredited course such as Emergency First Aid at Work or Paediatric First Aid for your designated first aiders on the same day. This is an awareness session, so there is no exam and no certificate to renew. Staff leave knowing what to look for and what to do.
What we cover, and what stays with the school
This session covers the anaphylaxis awareness and emergency response part of the guidance. The wider duties stay with the school, including the allergy policy, individual healthcare plans, allergen and food management and incident reporting. We are happy to talk through how the session fits alongside those, and how it sits within your whole school approach to allergy safety.
